TEMPLE OFFICERS

 

JAMES ROTENBERG - PRESIDENT
Jim and his family have been members of the Temple for over 40 years. His wife, Carol, grew up in the Five Towns. They have two children, Clifford and Andrew, both who attended Temple Israel's Nursery and Religious Schools and were B'nai Mitzvah at Temple Israel. Jim, a Temple Board Member, has been the Treasurer and a Vice President and has chaired the Long Range Planning Committee, has been a member of the Catering, Real Estate and Budget Committees. Jim retired as a Principal and Director of Global M&A from Mellon's Human Resources & Investor Solutions. He is a Special Advisor to Buck Consultants, a Xerox Company, and a Principal in JCR Consulting. Jim is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and the New York University School of Law. Jim and Carol reside in Lawrence.


LES MARTIN - FIRST VICE PRESIDENT

Les and his wife Irene became members of Temple Israel in 1975, shortly after moving their residence to the Five Towns. Les was first elected to the Board of Trustees around 1980, and has served the temple in many capacities, including president of the Brotherhood, member of several rabbinical search committees, chair of several cantorial search committees, chair of several nominating committees, chair of the by-laws revision committee, various officer positions including financial secretary and vice president, and for many years has chaired the legal committee, providing pro bono legal services to the temple in many areas of need. Les is most proud and honored to have been given the privilege of blowing the shofar for all High Holy Day services every year since 1976, and has expressed the hope that this tenure will continue for many more years. Irene has also served the temple in many capacities, including president of TIBS, chair of the 100th Anniversary Committee, and for many years has been the de facto proof-reader and articles editor for our Temple Bulletin. Les and Irene have 2 children, Andrew and Meredith, both of whom were bar/ bat mitzvah, confirmed, and graduated from the high school program at Temple Israel. Andrew is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and University of Colorado, and currently resides in Colorado. Meredith is a graduate of Duke University, is recently married, and resides with her husband in the Washington, DC area, and works for the federal government. Irene is a retired Professor of English at City University of New York. Les is a practicing attorney in Garden City, NY, specializing in the practice of matrimonial and family law, real estate, business acquisitions and transactions, wills, and general litigation, and remains active in numerous bar associations and civic groups and was recently installed as the President of the Nassau Lawyers Association of Long Island. Les and Irene have been married for nearly 40 years, and both strongly feel that Temple Israel has been a central part of their lives for the past 35 years, and pledge to continue to work hard to insure the long-term survival of their beloved Temple Israel.


BETH SANTOPOLO - VICE-PRESIDENT
Beth grew up in the five towns. She graduated from Hewlett High School, received a BS degree in early childhood education and speech arts from Hofstra University and an MS in reading from Hofstra University. She also has a special education certificate in early childhood. Beth and her husband, John have three daughters and one son-in-law. Beth was a Temple President at another reform synagogue. She has worked on membership and TIBS. She is also one of the "chefs" in the cooking club. Beth and John celebrated their adult B'nai Mitzvah at Temple Israel. Beth is thrilled to be a member of the Temple Israel family!


PENNY SCHUSTER - VICE PRESIDENT
Penny grew up in Lawrence. She graduated from Lawrence High School, received a B.S. Ed. from Ohio University and an MBA from Adelphi University. A member of Temple Israel since childhood, Penny was confirmed and graduated from the Religious School. Married to Norman for 25 years, Penny and Norman have two children. Caryn, 22, a recent graduate of SUNY New Paltz and Jimmy, 17, a senior at Lawrence High School. Caryn was a Bat Mitvah, was confirmed and graduated from the Hebrew High School. Jimmy was a Bar Mitzvah, was confirmed and attends Hebrew High School. Penny is officer in charge of all religious education, the caring committee, the adult volunteer choir, the bulletin and website. She is very active in the Lawrence School District PTA and is currently President of the Lawrence Senior High School PTA. Penny is Assistant Director of the Early Childhood Program at the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside.


ROSS WHITEHEAD - SECRETARY

Ross became a member of Temple Israel six years ago. Originally from the Chicago Area, Ross moved to New York in 1982 and onto Long Island in 1993. He is married (wife Valerie) with no children and lives in Lynbrook. Currently Ross has been a Trustee for the past four years and chairs the Catering Committee. An executive in the footwear industry, Ross currently works for Mark Tucker Inc., based in Manhattan and specializes in global sourcing and product development.


IRA HIMMELSTEIN - TREASURER

Ira has been a member of Temple Israel for 5 years, and has been on the board for the last two. He was previously a member of Temple Sinai for 15 years. Together with his wife Robin, Ira has lived in Hewlett for 25 years, and both of their children, Kerri and Jonathan, attended the local public schools and graduated from Hewlett High School. Ira is Vice President of Sport-Elec USA, a manufacturer of Health and Beauty products with their main office in France. He graduated CCNY with a degree in Economics and Finance. Ira is so glad to have found a home at Temple Israel and looks forward to serving for many years.


KENNETH SHAPIRO – FINANCIAL  SECRETARY

Kenny and his family have been members on Temple Israel for the past 22 years. He has grown up in this community and has lived in the Five Towns for the past 56 years. He attended elementary, middle school, and high school at Lawrence as has all his children. He owns his own textile business of which his factory is in England, which he has owned since 1972. He has served as a board member, Financial Secretary, Co chair of the dinner dance and numerous other positions. He and his wife Karen, have three children, George, Allison, and David. He is looking forward to many more years of active service at our Temple.
