Cantor Galina Paliy:
Temple Israel of Lawrence is proud to welcome Cantor Galina Paliy to grace
its pulpit, following a long tradition of exceptional cantors and
beautiful liturgical music.
Galina Paliy was raised in the city of Kiev, in the Ukraine, of the old Soviet Union. While attending public school, she began receiving
training in piano and choir at age 6. At age 15 she transferred to a
professional school in music, and four years later received a diploma in Musical Education and Choral Conducting. She then immediately enrolled at the
Kiev State Conservatory where she spent four years in advanced studies in
Music Education and Choral Conducting.
Galina Paliy emigrated to Israel in 1990, enrolled in the Rubin Academy
of Music and Dance in Jerusalem, and four years later received a bachelor's degree in Music Education and Choral Conducting. She then taught Music
for two years in public, religious and professional schools in Haifa.
Galina Paliy emigrated to the United States in 1995, where she served as
a volunteer leader of a choir at Temple Beth Ahavat Shalom in Brooklyn and
led
its services during the summer months. She also taught music at the
Hebrew school of Congregation Mount Sinai in Brooklyn Heights, New York, and
led
Sabbath services there. She served as the High Holyday Cantor in 1997
for the services conducted at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion on behalf of the Metropolitian Conference of the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods.
In 1998, Galina Paliy was accepted into the School of Sacred Music of
the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion to begin her studies
for the Cantorate. As a student, she has served in a cantorial capacity at Temple Beth Miriam, Elberon, New Jersey (1999-2002).
Galina Paliy completed a senior cantorial thesis on the subject of Women
in the Chain of Traditional Hassanut: Building on the Works of Cantors
Alter,
Ganchoff, Goldstein and Schall and a recital based on their
compositions.
